Full job description

Location: Cape Town
Employment Type: Full-time

We are looking for a technically strong and motivated graduate or junior-level Project Engineer / Quantity Surveyor to join our team.

This position is specifically suited to candidates with a qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering or Quantity Surveying who are looking to develop practical experience in technical estimating, site measurement, project costing and project coordination.

Our group specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of custom architectural products and structures, including aluminium and steel structures, pergolas, awnings, roofing systems, glazing and other bespoke projects.

This is a practical role combining technical office work with regular site visits. The successful candidate will work closely with senior management and will receive training on our products, estimating systems and project processes.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist with:

  • Site visits and accurate project measurements
  • Reviewing and qualifying new project enquiries
  • Preparing quotations and detailed project estimates
  • Material take-offs and quantity calculations
  • Reading architectural, engineering and construction drawings
  • Preparing basic project layouts and technical drawings
  • Calculating areas, lengths, quantities and material requirements
  • Obtaining and comparing supplier quotations
  • Costing aluminium, steel, roofing, glazing and related components
  • Assisting with tenders and larger commercial quotations
  • Evaluating the practical feasibility of proposed projects
  • Preparing information for manufacturing and installation teams
  • Liaising with suppliers, contractors, architects, engineers and clients
  • Assisting with project planning and site coordination
  • Monitoring project costs and variations
  • Attending site and project meetings when required

As experience is gained, the successful candidate will be given increasing responsibility for quotations, technical coordination and the management of smaller projects.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • A completed or near-completed tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Quantity Surveying
  • BEng, BSc Eng, BEngTech, BTech, BSc Quantity Surveying, Diploma or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Strong numerical and analytical ability
  • Good Microsoft Excel skills
  • Ability to understand measurements, dimensions and technical information
  • Comfortable reading technical, architectural or construction drawings
  • Willingness to work both in the office and on construction sites
  • Valid driver's licence
  • Able to commute to and work in Cape Town
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

This is primarily a graduate / entry-level position, ideally suited to someone with approximately 1–3 years professional experience.

Previous experience is not essential, provided the candidate has a strong technical foundation and the ability and willingness to learn.

Advantageous Skills

The following would be advantageous but are not essential:

  • AutoCAD or similar CAD experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Previous estimating or quantity take-off experience
  • Exposure to aluminium or steel fabrication
  • Construction/site experience
  • Understanding of structural drawings
  • Previous vacation work, internships or practical engineering experience

The Person We Are Looking For

Academic qualifications are important, but we are equally interested in the candidate's practical ability and attitude.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Technically minded
  • Energetic and proactive
  • Practical and hands-on
  • Comfortable working with numbers
  • Interested in understanding how products and structures are actually built
  • Able to solve problems logically
  • Detail orientated
  • Comfortable dealing with clients, suppliers and contractors
  • Willing to learn quickly and take on responsibility
  • Interested in developing into a broader technical/project management position

This role offers substantial practical exposure across estimating, engineering, fabrication, construction and project management, with the opportunity to develop into a Project Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Project Manager or Technical Management role within the business.
