Position: Code 14 Dangerous Goods Driver (Cross-Border)

Job Purpose

To safely, efficiently and professionally transport dangerous goods and other authorised cargo throughout South Africa and neighbouring countries while ensuring full compliance with road traffic legislation, dangerous goods regulations, company policies, customer requirements and cross-border procedures.

The Driver is responsible for the safe operation of company vehicles, the security of cargo, maintaining legal compliance, protecting company assets and providing excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safe Vehicle Operation

* Operate a Code 14 heavy motor vehicle safely and responsibly.
* Comply with all South African Road Traffic legislation and the road laws of neighbouring countries.
* Ensure compliance with dangerous goods transport legislation and SANS standards.
* Drive defensively and responsibly at all times.
* Adhere to prescribed speed limits and company telematics requirements.
* Prevent accidents through safe driving practices.

2. Dangerous Goods Transportation

* Transport hazardous and dangerous goods in accordance with applicable legislation.
* Ensure dangerous goods are correctly loaded, secured, labelled and documented.
* Verify dangerous goods declarations before departure.
* Ensure placards and emergency information are displayed correctly.
* Follow emergency response procedures in the event of a spill, accident or incident.
* Maintain a valid Dangerous Goods Certificate.

3. Cross-Border Operations

* Transport cargo into neighbouring countries

4. Vehicle Inspections

Conduct daily inspections including:

* Tyres
* Brakes
* Lights
* Air system
* Couplings
* Trailer connections
* Reflective tape
* Fire extinguishers
* Emergency triangles
* Spill kits
* Wheel nuts
* Oil
* Coolant
* Fuel
* Air leaks

Complete all inspection reports before and after every trip.

5. Loading and Offloading

* Verify cargo against delivery documentation.
* Ensure cargo is loaded safely.
* Confirm axle weights comply with legislation.
* Report damaged cargo immediately.
* Secure all loads before departure.

6. Documentation

Maintain accurate records including:

* Trip sheets
* Logbooks
* Delivery notes
* Proofs of delivery
* Fuel slips
* Toll slips
* Border documentation
* Vehicle inspection reports
* Incident reports
* Dangerous goods documentation

Return all documentation within company deadlines.

7. Customer Service

* Represent the company professionally.
* Maintain positive relationships with customers.
* Obtain signed Proofs of Delivery.
* Report customer complaints immediately.

8. Vehicle Care

* Keep the truck clean and presentable.
* Report defects immediately.
* Prevent misuse of company vehicles.
* Ensure scheduled services are attended.
* Protect company property.

9. Compliance

Comply with:

* Occupational Health and Safety requirements
* Company policies
* Dangerous Goods Regulations
* Cross-border transport regulations
* Customs legislation
* Customer safety procedures
* Fleet management requirements

10. Security Responsibilities

* Protect cargo from theft.
* Never leave the vehicle unsecured.
* Report suspicious activity immediately.
* Follow route security instructions.
* Ensure seals remain intact.

11. Communication

* Maintain regular communication with Fleet Controllers.
* Provide location updates when requested.
* Report delays immediately.
* Report accidents and incidents without delay.

12. Emergency Response

In the event of:

* Accident
* Spill
* Hijacking
* Vehicle breakdown
* Cargo damage

The Driver must:

* Follow company emergency procedures.
* Notify management immediately.
* Notify emergency services where required.
* Protect people and the environment.
* Complete incident reports.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

* Grade 12 (preferred).
* Valid Code 14 (EC) Driver’s Licence.
* Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
* Valid Dangerous Goods Certificate.
* Valid Passport suitable for cross-border travel.

Experience

* Minimum 5 years’ experience driving articulated heavy vehicles.
* Minimum 3 years’ dangerous goods transport experience.
* Cross-border driving experience.
* Experience transporting hazardous materials.
* Clean driving record.

Knowledge

* South African Road Traffic Act.
* Dangerous Goods legislation.
* Customs and border procedures.
* Fleet management systems.
* Load securing procedures.
* Defensive driving techniques.
* Vehicle inspections.

Work Location: On the road
