About This Role

The Really Great Teacher Company is recruiting an Online English Teacher to deliver conversational English lessons to young learners aged 6 to 13. The role pays $8.00 USD per hour taught, on an independent contractor basis, and is worked remotely from South Africa. Hours are not guaranteed and depend on student bookings. The successful teacher will hold a completed 120-hour TEFL, TESOL or CELTA certificate, a completed National Diploma or higher, and a minimum of two years' teaching experience including experience with learners in the Grade 2 to Grade 5 range. Classes are small, with one to three learners each, and follow a novel-based curriculum. Availability is required Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 16:00 SAST and across the weekend.

Position Details

• Location: Remote, worked from South Africa
• Students: Young learners aged 6 to 13
• Language of Instruction: English
• Rate: $8.00 USD per hour taught
• Hours: Not guaranteed. Teaching hours are allocated according to student bookings and will vary week to week
• Contract Type: Independent contractor
• Format: Online conversational English classes following a novel-based curriculum, 1 to 3 learners per class
• Schedule: You need to be available Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 16:00 SAST (05:00 to 10:00 EST), and on Saturday and Sunday between 23:00 and 16:00 SAST the following day (17:00 to 10:00 EST). Classes are scheduled within these windows as bookings come in

Requirements

• A minimum of 2 years' teaching experience
• A completed, accredited 120-hour TEFL, TESOL, CELTA or equivalent certificate
• A completed National Diploma or higher in any field
• Teaching experience with learners in the Grade 2 to Grade 5 range
• The ability to teach a novel-based curriculum
• The right to work as an independent contractor from South Africa
• Strong communication skills. You must be able to explain, question and redirect clearly and effectively for a young learner audience
• An animated, engaging on-camera delivery style. You lead the class directly and your delivery carries the lesson
• Adaptability, patience and empathy
• Strong time management and organisational skills
• A positive approach and practical problem-solving skills

Highly Advantageous Skills

• A Foundation Phase or Intermediate Phase teaching qualification
• Previous online teaching experience with young learners
• Experience with guided reading, shared reading or literature-based comprehension teaching
• Familiarity with online classroom platforms and digital teaching tools
• Experience teaching English as a second or additional language

Technical Requirements

• Computer: Intel Core i5 or higher, with 8GB RAM minimum
• Internet: Fibre connection with 20 Mbps upload and download speed, connected via LAN cable
• Backup Power: UPS with 4 to 5 hours of battery life
• Audio and Video: Noise-cancelling headset and HD webcam
