Fall Creek is creating a world with better blueberries through its friendly, collaborative team spread across the globe. To help us accomplish this, we are seeking a qualified Laboratory TC Technician. This position will be located in Paarl, South Africa.

The Laboratory TC Technician is responsible for performing general laboratory processes for in vitro plants and related activities to produce high-quality in vitro plants.

JOB SETTING:

This position is located in a laboratory setting and requires knowledge of aseptic techniques and the ability to handle tissue culture tools and follow safety guidelines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to remain seated for long periods of time and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as: lab coat, hair net, masks, gloves, etc., all day.
• The position involves repetitive tasks that require fine motor skills and sustained concentration with great attention to detail.
• Manual dexterity is essential.
• Must be able to work with chemicals.
• The position will perform repetitive tasks that often require fine motor skills.
• Must be able to lift 15 kg.
• Must be able to climb a ladder to store supplies/media.
• Comfortable working around heat-generating equipment such as an autoclave.
• Ability to work in aseptic conditions.
• Ability to work in a high-volume environment.

MAIN DUTIES: (Other tasks may be assigned)

• Performs general plant tissue culture laboratory processes, such as micropropagation, processing of quarantine material, meristem culture, callus formation, and seedling germination, and assists with general laboratory activities, such as media preparation and seedling distribution, in accordance with established protocols, while meeting productivity targets and maintaining high plant quality standards.
• Applies plant laboratory techniques and follows protocols as directed to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures.
• Ensures the quality of plantings and complies with contamination standards through constant self-monitoring of performance and plant quality.
• Assists with other tissue culture activities as needed or directed, such as bagging, parafilm application, and transferring plants to designated locations, etc.
• Follows instructions regarding plant variety, quantity per container, type of medium to use, and general objectives.
• Assess various activities such as plant maintenance, shipping, cooling, equipment maintenance, etc.
• Gather the necessary supplies for use, such as culture media containers and plants from the preparation areas; tools; etc.
• Inspect the plants and culture containers for signs of contamination before transferring them, and remove any contaminated containers accordingly.
• Accurately record data for all activities, including but not limited to task logs, general assessments, and observations in appropriate records as instructed.
• Immediately report any issues related to the plants (i.e., morphology, contaminants, numbers, etc.) or TC Media (i.e., consistency, appearance, labels, etc.)
• Stock the transfer room with supplies as needed or directed, such as wet wipes, alcohol, gloves, masks, etc., and update the inventory sheet.
• Always maintain a clean and safe work environment (workstation, Transfer Room, Culture Room, Laboratory) in accordance with the protocols, policies, and instructions established by the Supervisor.
• Ensure confidentiality in sensitive matters.
• Help foster an environment of respect, trust, and teamwork, in accordance with Fall Creek’s values and code of conduct.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND TRAINING

• Minimum high school education - Matric Certificate required
• At least 1 year of related work experience
• Must follow detailed instructions, guidelines, and protocols in English and/ or Afrikaans
• Requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to notice small variations.
• Requires the ability to be highly organized in the handling of materials, equipment, and supplies.
• Collaborative skills, including the ability to build positive relationships and maintain a positive attitude while working in a team environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in a clean environment with limited access to the outdoors.
• Must have own reliable transport to and from work - regular and reliable attendance at the main place of business
• Ability to learn new skills and work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
• Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work well with a diverse group of people.
• Must demonstrate professional and ethical business practices, adherence to company values, and a commitment to personal and professional development.

Fall Creek Farm & Nursery® offers a competitive salary and benefit package for this role. This position is office bound, but will require the candidate to be available to work in a nursery setting, and/or support the production team over weekends on a rotational basis.
