Job Advert Summary

A learner who supports the EH&S team across all site plants and operational areas by promoting awareness of Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements, responsibilities and objectives. The role assists in educating employees on the effective implementation of EH&S programmes and encourages a culture of safety, compliance and environmental stewardship. Through exposure to a live operating environment, the learner gains practical experience, applies academic knowledge in the workplace and develops the technical and professional competencies required to progress towards an EH&S Technologist role.

Minimum Requirements

• National Diploma in Safety Management and Grade 12 or equivalent (Math and Science compulsory)
• Risk Assessment (HIRA) training
• Incident Investigation
• Registered at SACPCMP (advantage)
• Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
• No prior work experience required; basic knowledge of the OH&S act, ISO systems and standards and other statutory compliance legislation will be an advantage
• Medically fit to work in a chemical process environment (pre-placement medical)
• Valid driver’s licence

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assists with the implementation of a proactive Environmental, Health & Safety Programme using best knowledge and experience of the EH&S Organisation across all plants and areas on site. Helps ensure that all site requirements are considered in the programme.
• Identifies and submits proposals for change to the EH&S team with the aim of improving the level of knowledge and experience.
• Learns and applies the Environmental, Health & Safety aspects of the Operating discipline management system. Supports the EH&S Element Owners with the upkeep of their elements of the system.
• Develops a working knowledge of site procedures, guidelines, LER’s and standards with respect to Health & Safety, and helps personnel in all areas to access them.
• Acts as an additional point of contact on site for Environmental, Health & Safety matters, and escalates issues to the responsible EH&S Technologist or SHERQ Manager.
• Assists with instructing teams and individuals with respect to Environmental, Health & Safety matters (e.g. toolbox talks, awareness sessions and inductions).
• Assists with the development and attainment of Environmental, Health & Safety objectives across all areas and plants on site.

• Assists with the Environmental, Health & Safety programme, monitoring, data collection, analysis and drafting of reports for the site.
• Supports communication between the plants, support areas and the EH&S Delivery Leaders, and learns to use the site EH&S Systems.
• Participates as required in checks for Safety & Loss Prevention, site projects and other checks related to Environment, Health & Safety, under supervision.
• Assists with the programme for Environmental, Health & Safety tests.
• Participates in, and assists with the documentation of, Environmental, Health & Safety incident investigations in all areas of the site and helps track that follow-up actions are taken to prevent a recurrence.
• Assists with the follow-up of preventive and corrective actions.
• Rotates through the PP plant, HDPE plant and site support areas according to an agreed learning plan, and keeps a logbook / portfolio of evidence that is signed off by the mentor.
• Assists with hazard identification and risk assessments, and with updating the site Hazard & Aspects Register.
• Assists with SHE inspections, Life-Saving Rules observations and internal audits across the site, and records findings in the relevant systems.
• Assists with environmental and occupational hygiene monitoring (e.g. waste, emissions, effluent, noise and chemical exposure) and the capture of results.
• Assists with capturing incident data, SHE statistics and KPI / dashboard updates.
• Works within the limits of delegated authority and under the supervision of a competent EH&S Technologist; does not sign off permits, risk assessments or investigation reports.
