1. Role purpose

To develop accurate, practical and commercially viable joinery designs, ensuring that each project is appropriately designed, costed and coordinated with relevant internal departments and external stakeholders.

The role bridges design, commercial costing and third-party coordination to support accurate quotations, efficient manufacturing, successful installation and a positive client experience.

2. Key responsibilities

A. Joinery design and technical development

Develop kitchen, cabinetry and other joinery designs in accordance with client requirements, project specifications and approved layouts.
Interpret architectural drawings, site measurements, project briefs and technical requirements.
Prepare and review design layouts, elevations, specifications and supporting documentation.
Ensure designs are practical for manufacturing, installation and the available materials and hardware.
Incorporate approved design amendments and maintain accurate project documentation.
Liaise with the draughting function where detailed production drawings or technical revisions are required.

B. Project costing and commercial accuracy

Prepare and maintain accurate project costings and bills of materials in accordance with approved pricing structures.
Assess material, hardware, accessory and other relevant project requirements.
Identify design changes that may affect project costs, pricing or margins.
Work with Sales and Finance, where required, to ensure that quotations reflect the approved design and costing.
Highlight discrepancies, cost risks and scope changes before quotations or revisions are finalised.
Support the control of avoidable costs arising from design errors, omissions or inaccurate specifications.

C. Third-party and project coordination

Coordinate design-related requirements with architects, builders, developers, suppliers, installers and other relevant external stakeholders.
Clarify technical specifications, design changes, site conditions and project requirements.
Maintain clear records of design approvals, revisions, outstanding information and stakeholder communications.

D. Internal collaboration and project handover

Work collaboratively with Sales, Draughting, Manufacturing, Site Management and Installation.
Ensure that approved designs, costing information and specifications are complete before project handover.
Respond to reasonable design and technical queries during manufacturing and installation.
Assist with identifying the causes of design-related rework and implementing corrective measures.
Maintain version control and ensure that obsolete drawings or specifications are not used for production.

E. Quality, governance and continuous improvement

Maintain accurate and accessible project records.
Follow approved design, costing, quotation and change-control procedures.
Protect confidential client, supplier and company information.
Identify opportunities to improve design accuracy, costing efficiency and coordination between departments.
Report recurring issues and recommend practical improvements to the relevant manager.

3. Key performance indicators

Performance will be assessed against agreed targets, including:

Accuracy and completeness of designs and technical documentation.
Accuracy of project costings and bills of materials.
Timely completion of design and costing deliverables.
Reduction in avoidable design errors, omissions and rework.
Effective coordination and resolution of third-party queries.
Timely incorporation and documentation of approved changes.
Quality of project handovers to Manufacturing and Installation.
Compliance with approved procedures and document-control requirements.

Targets should be agreed with the employee and relevant manager and measured using available project data.

4. Required competencies

Strong joinery and kitchen-design capability.
Understanding of materials, hardware, manufacturing constraints and installation requirements.
Commercial awareness and costing accuracy.
Strong attention to detail and document-control discipline.
Effective communication and stakeholder-management skills.
Ability to prioritise multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Problem-solving skills and the ability to identify technical or commercial risks.
Collaborative working relationships across Sales, Design, Manufacturing and Site Management.

5. Qualifications and experience

Relevant qualification or demonstrated experience in kitchen design, joinery design, interior design or a related technical field.
Proven experience producing joinery designs and project documentation.
Experience with costing, bills of materials and supplier or third-party coordination.
Proficiency in the design software and systems used by Top Living.

6. Scope and authority

The role is responsible for design deliverables, costing accuracy and design-related third-party coordination within approved company procedures.

Pricing exceptions, material substitutions, scope changes and commercial commitments outside delegated authority must be referred to the appropriate manager for approval.

7. Working arrangement

Any hybrid working arrangement must be formally approved and documented. The arrangement must preserve project deadlines, collaboration, stakeholder availability and the operational requirements of the business.

This job specification should be read together with the employee’s contract, applicable company policies and any formally agreed amendments.
