Full job description

The Really Great Teacher Company is recruiting qualified English teachers to teach young learners online. This is a remote, independent contractor role teaching students located in China via the ClassIn platform. Candidates must be based in and able to work from South Africa, as the teaching schedule follows South Africa Standard Time.

About the Role

You will deliver one-on-one and one-on-two English lessons to young learners aged 4 to 16, at proficiency levels ranging from A1 to C1. Students typically remain with the same teacher over time, allowing you to build continuity and track learner progress. Classes are 25 minutes long (demo classes 21–25 minutes).

Position Details

  • Location: Remote — candidates must be based in South Africa
  • Students: Young learners aged 4–16, based in China, proficiency A1–C1
  • Class type: One-on-one and one-on-two (maximum two learners per class)
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Platform: ClassIn
  • Rate: US$6.50 per hour
  • Class duration: 25 minutes (regular); 21–25 minutes (demo)
  • Contract type: Independent contractor
  • Availability: Teachers commit to a minimum of 14 hours of weekly availability, scheduled within the teaching window of 12:00–15:30 SAST (18:00–21:30 BJT), Monday to Sunday, up to a maximum of six days per week. Teachers choose how to distribute their available hours.
  • Hours and pay: Taught hours are based on student bookings rather than fixed guaranteed hours, so actual paid hours will vary according to demand.

Requirements

  • Completed National Diploma (tertiary) in any field
  • Accredited 120-hour TEFL, TESOL, CELTA or equivalent certification
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching experience
  • Clear and effective spoken English
  • A consistent weekly availability that can be reliably maintained
  • Strong communication, organisational, and time-management skills
  • Patience, adaptability, and a positive, encouraging approach to teaching young learners

Technical Requirements

  • Computer: Intel® Core™ i5 or higher, 8GB RAM minimum
  • Internet: Fibre connection with 20 Mbps upload/download via LAN cable
  • Backup power: UPS with 4–5 hours battery life
  • Audio/video: Noise-cancelling headset and HD webcam
