Full job description

  • Conduct research support, diagnostics and technical services for Meat Science Biochemistry projects, including sample receipt, preparation, processing and laboratory analyses.
  • Collect, capture and process laboratory and project data with basic analysis, and
  • Maintain accurate records, worksheets and electronic databases.
  • Operate, utilize and maintain biochemistry laboratory facilities, instruments and consumables (including calibration checks, routine maintenance and fault reporting).
  • Plan and coordinate own work activities according to project plans and turnaround
  • Supervise allocated support staff or students where applicable.
  • Adhere to quality standards, SOPs and laboratory controls, and provide verbal and written reports on work activities and results.
  • Support optimization of equipment, processes and systems under supervision and provide input on new technologies.
  • Present results/updates to internal stakeholders and assist with training of junior staff and students.
  • Comply with SHE/OHS requirements, biosafety procedures and waste management protocols in the laboratory.

  • National Diploma in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Food Science, Animal Science (with Biochemistry/Meat Science) or related field.
  • BTech/BSc in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Food Science, Animal Science (with Biochemistry/Meat Science) or related field will be advantageous.
  • 3 years’ applicable experience.
  • Practical experience in laboratory-based research support and biochemistry or meat science analytical procedures will be advantageous.
  • Competence in data capture, basic data analysis, record keeping and report writing.
  • Good communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet project timelines.
  • Complies with SHE/OHS, quality standards and good laboratory practice.
  • Registration with a relevant scientific registration body will be advantageous.
  • A valid South African driver’s license will be an added advantage.
