Conservation, Environmental & Horticulture Manager

We are a world-class, 250-hectare mixed-use precinct in Cape Town, combining asset classes of commercial, residential, retail, and leisure. You will work in a dynamic, forward-thinking environment where your expertise directly enhances the quality of life for thousands of residents, businesses, and visitors, while actively preserving vital natural ecosystems.
In this pivotal role, you will lead the management of an award-winning nature reserve, an iconic canal system, beautiful landscaped common areas, and a dedicated green team. As part of the management team, you will shape the future of urban conservation and eco-tourism while ensuring top-tier environmental compliance.
Areas of Responsibility
1. Conservation & Eco-Tourism Management
- Oversee the daily operations of a protected wetland and nature reserve.
- Protect and rehabilitate indigenous flora and fauna species.
- Drive environmental education programs for schools and community groups.
- Grow sustainable eco-tourism initiatives and visitor experiences.
- Implement goals set out in the precinct's Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
2. Horticulture & Landscape Management
- Oversee large-scale horticulture across common areas, verges, and public parks.
- Manage landscaping contractors to ensure high-quality aesthetic standards.
- Implement sustainable planting choices, prioritizing water-wise, indigenous greenery.
- Supervise the maintenance of active recreational green spaces and sports club areas.
3. Waterways & Environmental Compliance
- Monitor water quality and ecosystem health across extensive canal systems and detention ponds.
- Act as or manage the Environmental Control Officer (ECO) for precinct construction sites.
- Audit construction activities to guarantee compliance with strict environmental legislation.
- Ensure all green operations meet municipal, provincial, and national environmental laws.
4. Leadership, Budgeting & Safety
- Direct, mentor, and manage performance for the internal green team.
- Handle HR functions, including training plans, team motivation, and dispute resolution.
- Prepare, track, and manage the department’s annual capital and operational budgets.
- Enforce strict Health & Safety (HSE) protocols across all horticultural and conservation activities.
5. Stakeholder & Public Relations
- Act as the primary point of contact for environmental and green-space matters.
- Build strong relationships with property owners, developers, contractors, and local authorities.
- Coordinate joint initiatives with internal Marketing, Safety, and Security teams.
- Manage public relations, community feedback, and media queries regarding local wildlife or green infrastructure.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
· Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental management, conservation, horticulture or a closely related discipline.
· At least 5 years’ relevant management experience.
· Strong environmental management and conservation knowledge.
· Sufficient horticultural and landscaping knowledge to manage specialists, contractors and operational teams.
· Experience managing people, contractors and service providers.
· Experience managing budgets and projects.
· Strong stakeholder and interpersonal skills.
· Experience in a mixed-use precinct, municipality, nature reserve, property environment, estate, environmental consultancy or similar environment would be advantageous.

· Highly organised and able to manage several operational priorities simultaneously.
· Proactive, energetic and self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and practical can-do approach.
· Capable people leader who can motivate an operational team.
· Comfortable dealing with operational staff and contractors as well as developers, property owners, environmental specialists and senior executives.
· Strong project management, follow-through, attention to detail and deadline management.
· Commercially aware, with sound basic financial and budget-management capability.
