When hiring or assessing a Senior eCommerce Photographer with a strong focus on model photography and model direction, the requirements should go beyond camera skills and include leadership, styling awareness, production efficiency, and the ability to consistently deliver commercially effective imagery.

Senior Photographer – eCommerce (Model Photography, Model Direction & Product Photography)

Essential Experience

  • 6+ years' professional photography experience within fashion, apparel, lifestyle, or retail eCommerce environments.
  • Proven experience directing female, male, childrenswear, and/or activewear model shoots.
  • Experience working in a high-volume eCommerce production studio.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating consistent model photography across multiple fashion categories.
  • Experience collaborating with stylists, hair & makeup artists, producers, retouchers, and studio coordinators.
  • Experience shooting to brand guidelines while maintaining commercial appeal.
  • Experience managing multiple shoot priorities and meeting daily production targets.

Technical Photography Skills

  • Advanced understanding of studio lighting for fashion and apparel photography.
  • Strong knowledge of camera systems, lenses, exposure, colour management, and tethered shooting workflows.
  • Ability to create consistent image quality across large product volumes.
  • Experience with both white background eCommerce imagery and creative lifestyle photography.
  • Strong understanding of garment presentation, fit, drape, and fabric characteristics.

Advanced Lighting & Creative Problem-Solving

  • Interpret creative briefs and translate them into effective lighting setups that align with each brand's visual identity.
  • Create consistent lighting setups across high-volume eCommerce productions while maintaining brand standards.
  • Work confidently with studio gear: flash, continuous lighting, modifiers, reflectors, flags, scrims, and light-shaping tools.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve lighting challenges quickly during production.
  • Replicate existing lighting references and develop new lighting approaches where required.

Model Direction & Coaching Skills

  • Confidently direct professional and non-professional models.
  • Provide clear posing instructions that are easy to understand.
  • Adapt direction based on model experience levels.
  • Capture natural, authentic expressions and body language.
  • Guide models to showcase garments effectively while maintaining brand identity.
  • Quickly identify flattering poses for different body shapes and garment categories.
  • Manage facial expressions, hand placement, posture, and movement effectively.
  • Deliver consistent poses across multiple products while avoiding repetitive imagery.

eCommerce-Specific Knowledge

  • Understanding of conversion-driven photography.
  • Knowledge of image requirements for online retail platforms.
  • Understanding of product visibility and garment-selling priorities.
  • Ability to balance creativity with commercial requirements.
  • Knowledge of shot lists, image ratios, and cropping requirements.
  • Experience maintaining consistency across large seasonal product ranges.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Ability to mentor junior photographers.
  • Ability to train junior photographers on studio lighting techniques and best practices.
  • Continuously explore and test new lighting approaches to enhance brand imagery and studio capability.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to models and team members.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with buying, marketing, creative, and eCommerce teams.
  • Experience contributing to studio process improvements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills under production pressure.

Software & Workflow Experience

  • Adobe Photoshop.
  • Adobe Lightroom or Capture One.
  • Tethered shooting workflows.
  • Digital asset management systems.
  • Colour correction and image quality assessment.
  • Understanding of retouching requirements and post-production workflows.
