Full job description
Abagold is seeking a self-motivated team player, with a genuine passion for sustainable aquaculture. The Hatchery Research Assistant undertakes the effective maintenance and assistance in the production of multidisciplinary research and innovation as well as quality systems maintenance within the Abagold Hatchery department.
Key Responsibilities
Research, Technical & Innovation Projects
- Assist in delivering agreed R&D outputs including protocols, research reports, guidelines, policy implementation, and decision-support tools.
- Collaborate with team members to develop experimental designs and analyze large datasets across multiple concurrent projects.
- Contribute to projects on abalone nutrition, physiology, water quality, and animal welfare.
Production Support
- Provide hands-on support to the production teams in all sections within the hatchery department.
- Assist in maintaining protocols to mitigate biosecurity and animal health risks in line with legislative and best practice requirements.
- Coordinate and prepare for internal and external audits including biosecurity, stock inspections, and DFFE compliance. Following audits, facilitate corrective actions and risk assessments.
- Support compliance with relevant legislation, sustainability requirements, and market access obligations.
- Contribute to phytoplankton and water quality monitoring, animal health management, and One Health protocol implementation.
- Assist with hatchery department administrative tasks as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A degree in Animal Science, Aquaculture, Ecology, Marine Biology, Zoology, or a related field.
- Good organizational and time management skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
