Purpose of the Role

The Junior Dam Engineer will support the engineering team in the design, assessment, rehabilitation, and compliance documentation of dams and associated infrastructure. The focus of the role is assisting with DWS submissions, Dam Safety requirements, and technical reporting, while gaining hands-on experience through site investigations and construction support.

Key Responsibilities1) DWS & Dam Safety Compliance Support

  • Assist with preparation of Dam Safety submissions in line with DWS requirements.
  • Support compilation of:
  • Dam classification documentation
  • Safety inspection reports
  • Design reports and supporting calculations
  • Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals
  • Emergency Preparedness Plans (EPPs)
  • As-built completion packages
  • Assist with engineering inputs for Water Use Licence Applications (WULA) and related authorisation processes.

2) Engineering Design & Technical Work

  • Assist with:
  • Spillway sizing and hydraulic checks
  • Outlet works and conveyance design
  • Earthworks design and stability considerations
  • Basic hydrological calculations and runoff estimation
  • Produce and update design drawings, layouts, and construction detail sheets (CAD-based).
  • Assist with preparing BOQs, specifications, and tender documentation.

3) Site Work & Construction Support

  • Attend site inspections and assist with:
  • Condition assessments
  • Construction observations
  • Quality control documentation and photo logs
  • Contractor coordination support
  • Participate in commissioning and handover processes.

4) Reporting & Documentation

  • Compile structured technical reports with professional formatting.
  • Manage document registers, drawing revisions, and project filing standards.
  • Maintain accurate site records, meeting notes, and action lists.

5) Team Coordination

  • Work with multidisciplinary professionals including:
  • irrigation designers
  • geotechnical and civil engineers
  • environmental specialists
  • survey teams
  • contractors and clients

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng / BSc Eng (Civil Engineering) or BTech / Advanced Diploma (Civil Engineering)
  • 0–3 years relevant experience (graduate-level candidates welcome)
  • Basic understanding of:
  • dam components & function
  • drainage, seepage, spillway logic
  • technical drawing standards
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (Civil 3D is an advantage)
  • Strong report writing and MS Office skills
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites

Advantageous (Not Required)

  • Exposure to:
  • DWS Dam Safety processes
  • WULA / GA submissions
  • HEC-HMS / HEC-RAS or similar modelling tools
  • geotechnical investigations and stability concepts
  • ECSA candidacy registration (or intent to register)
