Tuckshop Operations Manager
Vereeniging/Meyerton
Job type: Part-time, school-term position Working days: Monday to Friday during school terms Remuneration: Guaranteed base pay plus performance-based commission Start date: Immediately Role overview We are looking for a reliable, honest and hands-on Tuckshop Operations Manager to help manage two school tuckshops. The manager will be based mainly at the busier tuckshop while overseeing the operations, sales, stock, cash control and staff performance of both locations. This is not an office-only management position. The successful candidate must be comfortable serving customers, operating the till, counting stock, supervising kitchen workers and completing daily reports. Main responsibilities Sales and customer service - Operate the till and serve learners and staff at the main tuckshop. - Ensure every sale is recorded correctly. - Maintain fast, friendly and professional customer service. - Prevent unauthorized discounts, credit, free food or unrecorded sales. - Help increase sales by identifying popular products and customer demand. Cash management - Maintain and verify the opening cash float. - Complete daily cash-ups for both tuckshops. - Compare physical cash with recorded sales. - Record card, cash and other electronic payments separately. - Immediately report any cash shortages or discrepancies. - Ensure tuckshop money is stored and transferred securely. Stock control - Monitor stock levels at both tuckshops. - Record stock transferred from Tuckshop 1 to Tuckshop 2. - Confirm that stock delivered matches the transfer records. - Conduct daily counts of high-risk and high-value products. - Assist with full weekly stock counts. - Record damaged, expired, spoiled or wasted stock. - Prevent unauthorized removal or consumption of stock. - Prepare stock requirements and order requests for the owner. Staff supervision - Supervise the two kitchen workers. - Monitor attendance, punctuality, hygiene and productivity. - Ensure food is prepared on time and according to the required portions. - Make sure staff follow opening, cleaning and closing procedures. - Address minor performance issues professionally and report serious problems to the owner. - Arrange the daily workflow between food preparation, packing and sales. Food and hygiene standards - Ensure work areas, equipment and serving counters remain clean. - Check that food is stored, prepared and served safely. - Monitor food portions to reduce unnecessary wastage. - Ensure expired, spoiled or unsafe food is never sold. - Make sure staff follow the school’s hygiene and safety requirements. Reporting The manager must send the owner a daily closing report containing: - Sales total for each tuckshop. - Cash and electronic-payment totals. - Cash-up differences, if any. - Stock transferred between tuckshops. - Wastage, spoilage and damaged stock. - Products running low. - Staff attendance or operational problems. - Photographs of required cash-up and stock records. Performance expectations The successful candidate will be expected to: - Keep cash and stock differences within acceptable limits. - Ensure all sales are recorded. - Reduce food wastage and unexplained stock losses. - Maintain accurate daily records. - Ensure both tuckshops open and operate on time. - Improve sales without using unauthorized discounts or credit. - Maintain a clean and professional tuckshop environment. - Communicate problems honestly and immediately. Minimum requirements - Previous experience as a cashier, shop supervisor, restaurant supervisor, canteen worker or retail manager. - Experience handling cash and completing cash-ups. - Basic stock-counting and recordkeeping ability. - Strong basic mathematics skills. - Ability to use WhatsApp, a calculator and a basic point-of-sale system. - Able to travel between the two nearby tuckshops when required. - Reliable transport or a dependable daily transport arrangement. - Available every weekday during school terms. - Able to work early mornings and during school break periods. - At least two contactable references. Preferred qualities - Honest and accountable. - Consistently punctual. - Confident but respectful when supervising staff. - Calm during busy periods. - Comfortable working around school learners. - Able to identify and solve problems without constant supervision. - Sales-focused while still protecting profit and stock. - Willing to report mistakes and discrepancies honestly. - Interested in earning more through improved business performance. Remuneration structure The successful candidate will receive: - A guaranteed base payment for the agreed working hours. - A performance commission or bonus based on verified business growth. - Commission will only be calculated after sales, cash, stock transfers, refunds and wastage have been checked. - Unauthorized discounts, unrecorded sales or unexplained stock discrepancies may affect performance-bonus eligibility. - Additional approved working hours will be handled according to the employment agreement. The exact commission formula will be explained before employment begins and included in the written agreement.
