Waiter / Waitress

Baker & Bean, Simon’s Town

We’re recruiting for:

  • One senior waiter / waitress position.
  • Part-time waiter / waitress positions for the summer season.

Baker & Bean is a small, independent, 40-seater daytime café, bakery and deli serving breakfast and lunch. We have a very small, closely coordinated team, so every person takes substantial responsibility for customer service, efficient service and cleanliness.

Both roles require previous experience. Please apply only if you meet every essential requirement below.

  • Proven waiter and POS experience. You must confidently manage tables and use POS systems, and be comfortable adapting to our handheld ordering devices. We explain our procedures, but cannot teach basic waitering skills or train someone from scratch.
  • Warm, confident customer service. You must enjoy chatting with customers, starting conversations and making people feel welcome. Taking orders and doing the bare minimum is insufficient.
  • Excellent spoken and written English. You must communicate clearly with local and international customers, write accurately and follow our systems confidently.

  • Ability to handle exceptionally busy service. You must manage several tables and competing requests while remaining organised, accurate and friendly. Multitasking under pressure is a genuine daily requirement during tourist season.
  • Initiative and high cleaning standards. Everyone clears tables, cleans and keeps the café exceptionally tidy. You must notice what needs doing and act without repeated reminders.
  • Punctuality, reliability and practical transport. We primarily seek someone living in or around Simon’s Town because of travel costs, journey time and occasional requests to cover shifts at short notice. Exceptional candidates from further away will be considered where transport is practical and reliable.
  • Professional conduct. Arriving hungover, impaired or smelling of alcohol, or missing shifts because of drinking, is unacceptable.
