Invigilator Job Description

Skills and Attributes:

  • Able to remain calm and alert for extended periods
  • Discreet and respectful of confidentiality

Technical Requirements:

  • Basic computer literacy (may be required for online or digital assessments)
  • Ability to complete simple written reports (e.g., incident logs)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Arrive at least and hour before the scheduled assessment time.
  • Collect assessment pack at the designated point
  • Set up the examination venue in accordance with guidelines:
  • There should be at least one seating space open between candidates
  • Display the following information on the board:
  • Date and Time
  • Programme and Module
  • Start and end times together with reading time
  • Check the number of scripts and answer booklets against the attendance register
  • Upon entry, students will need to provide a photo identification document
  • Ensure all candidates are seated according to the seating plan
  • Distribute and collect exam papers/materials
  • Read assessment rules and special instructions clearly to candidates at the start of the exam
  • Monitor candidates throughout the exam to prevent misconduct
  • Manage late arrivals, early leavers and toilet breaks appropriately
  • Handle incidents (e.g., illness, cheating and queries) and report to relevant staff
  • Always maintain exam integrity and confidentiality
  • Complete necessary documentation and reconcile scripts and answer booklets (complete attendance registers, invigilator reports and incident reports where applicable)
  • Sign documents before handing over
