JOB PURPOSE

The Assistant Pharmacist will support the Pharmacist and pharmacy team in providing safe, efficient and professional pharmaceutical services to customers. The successful candidate will assist with dispensing, customer service, stock management and day-to-day pharmacy operations while contributing to the growth and sales performance of the pharmacy.

As this is a newly established pharmacy, the successful candidate should be energetic, customer-focused, commercially minded and comfortable working in a developing business environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Pharmaceutical and Dispensing Support

• Assist the Pharmacist with the preparation and dispensing of prescriptions in accordance with applicable legislation and pharmacy procedures.
• Ensure prescriptions and customer information are handled accurately and confidentially.
• Assist with checking medication, labels, quantities and expiry dates under the supervision of the Pharmacist.
• Provide appropriate customer support and refer clinical queries to the Pharmacist when required.
• Maintain high standards of accuracy and professionalism at all times.

2. Customer Service

• Provide friendly, professional and efficient service to all customers.
• Assist customers with over-the-counter products and general pharmacy-related enquiries within the scope of the position.
• Develop positive relationships with customers and encourage customer loyalty.
• Handle customer complaints and queries professionally and escalate matters where necessary.
• Ensure customers receive a positive experience from entering the pharmacy until completion of their purchase.

3. Sales and Business Development

• Actively contribute to achieving pharmacy sales targets.
• Promote appropriate pharmacy products, wellness products and over-the-counter products to customers.
• Identify customer needs and recommend suitable products within the appropriate scope of practice.
• Assist with promotions, campaigns and merchandising initiatives.
• Support the pharmacy in growing its customer base and retaining existing customers.
• Demonstrate strong selling and communication skills without compromising professional or ethical standards.

4. Stock Management

• Assist with receiving, checking and shelving stock.
• Monitor stock levels and communicate low-stock items to the Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager.
• Check expiry dates and assist with maintaining proper stock rotation.
• Assist with stock counts and stocktaking.
• Ensure shelves and pharmacy areas are clean, organised and properly merchandised.
• Report damaged, expired or missing stock promptly.

5. Pharmacy Operations and Compliance

• Follow all pharmacy policies, procedures and applicable legislative requirements.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation as required.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding patients, customers and pharmacy information.
• Assist in maintaining a clean, safe and professional pharmacy environment.
• Support the Pharmacist and management team with general pharmacy administration and operational duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Relevant pharmacy qualification.
• 1–2 years' relevant pharmacy experience.
• Experience working in a retail/community pharmacy environment will be advantageous.
• Strong sales and customer service experience.
• Good knowledge of pharmacy products and over-the-counter products.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good computer literacy.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Note: The successful candidate will be required to work within the scope of their qualification, registration/status and applicable South African pharmacy legislation, under the appropriate supervision of the Pharmacist/Pharmacy Manager where required.
