Purpose:

The primary responsibility of this role is to safely and efficiently collect samples, conduct field sampling activities, and deliver laboratory consumables while ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and turnaround time requirements. The Driver plays a critical role in maintaining customer satisfaction, preserving sample integrity, and supporting laboratory operations through reliable logistical services.


Responsibilities:


Sample Collection and Deliveries

  • Collect samples from clients in accordance with scheduled collection plans.
  • Conduct field sampling activities at client sites as required.
  • Deliver laboratory consumables and related materials to clients accurately and timeously.
  • Ensure all samples are handled, transported, and stored in accordance with quality and integrity requirements.
  • Verify collection and delivery documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients regarding collections, deliveries, and scheduling.

Route Planning and Schedule Management

  • Plan daily collection and delivery routes to maximize efficiency and meet turnaround times.
  • Follow collection schedules and ensure timely execution of all assigned tasks.
  • Provide early notification to the direct supervisor regarding delays, incidents, or challenges that may affect service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental turnaround time requirements and performance targets.

Vehicle Management and Maintenance

  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after use.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of company vehicles.
  • Monitor vehicle performance and report maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Coordinate vehicle servicing and maintenance requests through the appropriate channels.
  • Ensure all vehicle documentation, licensing, and inspection requirements remain current.
  • Responsible for the safekeeping of company vehicles, equipment, and assets under your control.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Perform all duties in accordance with company Quality Management System requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable ISO standards, company procedures, and client-specific requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of collections, deliveries, and sampling activities.
  • Ensure traceability and integrity of all samples from collection through delivery to the laboratory.
  • Report non-conformances, incidents, and quality concerns appropriately.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the department.

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance

  • Adhere to all occupational health, safety, environment, and quality (SHEQ) policies and procedures.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Comply with road traffic legislation and company driving policies.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and responsibly.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Support the company's goal of maintaining zero safety incidents and traffic violations.

Customer Service and Communication

  • Maintain professional and positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service during all client interactions.
  • Represent SafetySA professionally and in line with company values.
  • Ensure adherence to company dress code and professional conduct standards.
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory personnel, management, and clients.

Administration and Reporting

  • Complete all collection, delivery, inspection, and sampling records accurately and timeously.
  • Submit required reports, logs, vehicle checklists, and expense claims within specified deadlines.
  • Utilize company systems and technology effectively to support operational requirements.
  • Ensure all company equipment and documentation are maintained and secured.


Qualification:

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Valid South African Driver's Licence (Code B or higher).
  • Defensive Driving Certificate will be advantageous.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years' professional driving experience.
  • Experience in sample collection, courier, logistics, laboratory, or related services preferred.
  • Experience working with clients in a professional service environment.
  • Proven track record of maintaining safe driving practices and vehicle care.

Skills:

  • South African road traffic legislation and regulations.
  • Safe vehicle operation and defensive driving principles.
  • Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Sample handling, transportation, and chain-of-custody principles.
  • Quality management systems and compliance requirements.
  • Client service standards and professional workplace conduct.
  • Company policies and procedures relating to fleet management and logistics.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance and inspection requirements.

Other:

  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively as required.
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends when operationally required.
  • Physically fit and capable of loading, unloading, and handling samples and deliveries.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively.
  • Ability to work in laboratory, industrial, manufacturing, food production, and client environments.
