productivity at work

A typical day at paeds section begins at 6:45@m,with an overcrowded, small ward with staff shortage,it all begins with taking of hand over reports,so that you know all your patients and what to expect. As an enrolled nurse, you start preparing the medicine trolley, assist if there are kids who have not bathed or given food, make sure that the drips are running well and that the patients and parents are okay and at ease. Workplace becomes a nightmare if theres no group work and support especially from managent, you can feel all depressed without necessary motivation and support because the demands are too much especially for enrolld nurses, they always work harder than all other categories, always willing to learn more and push boundaries. The sadest reality about the working hours is that you never get to see your family but seing patients that you treat everyday getting better makes all the hard times worth it.

A great place to acquire technical experince.

Everyday when we start in the morning we would first check the system for open and pending calls, attend to them and make sure the customer is satisfied. At the same time we'd check the systems for any problems that could have occurred overnight which would need our immediate attention. After that we would prioritize the tasks for the day and start attending to them. Technical meetings were held weekly and management meetings were held every fortnight. I learned a lot about networking (LAN), this is mostly due to the size of the hospital which has 90% PC connectivity. The hospital has a radius of over a kilometer. We were under staffed and worked long hours, but I enjoyed every moment. The hardest part about about the job was traveling everyday to work for almost an hour in the morning and afternoon. The most enjoyable part about my job at the hospital was the troubleshooting, I enjoyed finding solutions to difficult assignments

Pros

Working with highly skilled professionals

Cons

The long drive to work everyday

Challenging but Fulfilling

Working at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital was always a challenging and fulfilling at the same time. The hospital is too big with limited resources for staff to be able to perform their duties effectively and understaffed due to limited budget allocations hence most of the posts would be frozen. One official would be performing duties of +- three officials. As a supervisor u end-up doing operational work in order for service delivery to efficient. As a manager / supervisor you need to have good communication skills and be a good motivator to be able to make your staff understand and be willing to still continue delivering at their best irrespective of the working conditions. You also have to have good negotiating skills as daily you are dealing with a crowd of unhappy suppliers due to non payment, you have to negotiate with them to give you stock irrespective of the fact that the Hospital is owing them thousands. You have to negotiate with other institutions borrowing consumables for patients that are even booked for theatre and this is the hardest part of the job. The most fulfilling of of this job was knowing that after all the above stress and pressure a patient is saved or received treatment that makes you smile and be proud of the fact that you managed to save the day. Working at Chris Hani Baragwanath has thought me to love my work and always want to do the best or excel in everything that i do. It has also thought me the importance of team work with your colleagues and other stake holders. I also learnt the importance of being a supervisor/manager and a boss and -

The speech Therapy department at the CHBAH is productive and well coordinated. Management ensures effective delegation.

Each day is divided into responsibilities for inpatients as well as outpatient services. Effective time management ensured that all patients could be seen during a working day.I have learned time management skills, delegation skills as well as dealing with difficult situations such as the deaths of patients. My clinical application of intervention as been refined to ensure that each patient receives the best possible service suited to their needs.Fair and effective management ensures that the department is functioning optimally at all times. With limited resources available the department is always positive due to the influence of management.Initially it was difficult for me to adjust to the different people that I had to work with. But most were friendly and inviting. The hardest part of my job was dealing with the deaths of patients and adapting to the variety of cultures at work. The experienced enriched me and my co-workers aided me in becoming a stronger person.I enjoy working with children with Cerebral Palsy and other neurological disorders. It does not matter how difficult my day started it always improved after spending time with the children with special needs.

Pros

provides a lot of experience and exposure to a variety of disorders

Cons

for me personally working in a medical hospital setting was difficult
