Long Hours and over time and night shifts
The Post Office is a great company to work for. Over 34 years where I worked in various departments, I was seldom held back in terms of personal development (studies) but in terms of career advancement, employment equity was not applied and implemented fairly. I suppose that the influence of the human element in Human Capital cannot be ruled out. I enjoyed being able to make a positive impact to fellow workers and the citizens of SA who we were appointed to serve. The culture at the PO is awesome and when I had personal family tragedy with the passing of my mother, the sense of family through the support I received from colleagues across the country was overwhelming. travelling overseas and being allowed to share my management skills with the Independent Electoral Commission in thew first Democratic elections in 1994, are some momentous highlights of a career that I am extremely proud of.

I started from university to be a teller, then Management Accountant and finally Manager: CMA. The management were keen to develop women, the Post Office from turned from loss making to profit making entity every employee was involved in turnaround strategy. The most enjoyable part of the job was when new products were introduced to the system.

A day at work would usually start by arriving at a branch in the early hours of the morning. All relevant procedures and processes would be examined and guidance provided on the correct operational methods. While this verifications are conducted, level one training is provided as and where needed, documents completed and discussed, corrective and preventative actions identified after core non conformances were identified and corrected. The day is usually closed off with a exit interviews where after relevant progression reports are completed, performance measurements finalised and actions taken recorded. Report are forwarded to all involved and interested parties for evaluation and continued monitorring
Interacting with various computer end users at all levels, novice to expects regarding computer problems. I learnt a lot with dealing with different types of people. As a national first contact center for IT support for South African Post Office employees we always share information and try to assist each other as team members. The challenges arise when maybe dealing with a novice user and South African Post Office users are illiterate and in some cases the language is a problem and you have to try and assist that person telephonically. The enjoyable part is when you successfully assist someone and you some sort build a relationship with that person and the next time they call they remember you.
you work shifts and there is a standby allowance
you support large number of users
It is a fairly excellent public institution which was unfortunately well managed at the highest managerial level, hence the current difficulties. Typical day at work involves interactions at all levels within the organization and externally. Excellent supervisors whop have confidence in their juniors to do what is required of them. Co-workers excellent professional who showed maturity by being able to perform independently and meeting datelines and being extremely productive. The hardest part was interacting with various unions with different agendas. The most enjoyable part is obviously imparting skills to employees, them graduating and being able to effectively utilize those skills in their work environment and seeing them climb the ladder within or outside the organization because of the newly acquired skills.
Long and extended travels
a typical day at work will mean me answering telephone from clients all over the world and I have attended several training during my experience and the highlight was being accredited as a facilitator and implementer of company's best practices in becoming world class unfortunately my co workers are old people and are resistance to change and their comfortable in their own space the hardest part of the job is always fixing the wrong of the subordinates yet gaining experience at the same time and them repeating the same mistakes time and again the most part of the job is doing what I do bets and even my manage does not know how I do it
