Job Specification: Handyman / Maintenance Worker

Location: South of Johannesburg, Gauteng

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and reliable Handyman / Maintenance Worker to join our hotel maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all hotel facilities, guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house operations are maintained to a high standard. The role requires practical experience in general maintenance, including basic tiling, plumbing, electrical work, painting, carpentry, and repairs, while maintaining excellent safety and service standards expected within a 4-star hospitality environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Maintenance

  • Perform routine inspections of hotel facilities and equipment.
  • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and hotel departments.
  • Repair and maintain fixtures, fittings, furniture, doors, locks, windows, and other building components.
  • Assist with renovations and improvement projects when required.

Plumbing

  • Repair leaking taps, pipes, toilets, cisterns, and drainage systems.
  • Install and replace plumbing fixtures and fittings.
  • Conduct basic fault-finding and preventative maintenance on plumbing systems.
  • Ensure water systems operate efficiently and safely.

Electrical

  • Replace light fittings, bulbs, switches, plug points, and circuit breakers where permitted.
  • Diagnose and resolve minor electrical faults.
  • Conduct routine checks of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Escalate complex electrical issues to qualified electricians when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards.

Tiling and Building Repairs

  • Conduct basic tiling repairs and replacement of damaged tiles.
  • Repair grouting and sealants in bathrooms, kitchens, and public areas.
  • Perform minor plastering, patching, and wall repairs.
  • Carry out painting and finishing work as required.

General Facilities Support

  • Assist with HVAC, pool, irrigation, and other facility-related maintenance tasks.
  • Support setup and maintenance of conference and event venues.
  • Monitor and maintain hotel grounds and external areas.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and maintenance stores are organized and properly maintained.

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.
  • Follow hotel safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Identify and report safety hazards immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times.

Minimum RequirementsEducation

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
  • Relevant technical qualification, trade certificate, or maintenance-related training will be advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a handyman, maintenance, or facilities maintenance role.
  • Previous experience within a hotel, hospitality, lodge, residential estate, or commercial property environment is advantageous.

Technical Skills

The successful candidate should demonstrate practical competency in:

  • Basic plumbing repairs and installations.
  • Basic electrical maintenance and fault finding.
  • Tiling repairs and installation.
  • Painting and finishing.
  • Carpentry and minor building repairs.
  • General maintenance and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Use of hand and power tools.
  • Reading basic maintenance manuals and instructions.

Knowledge

  • Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) principles.
  • Basic building maintenance systems.
  • Preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Customer service principles within a hospitality environment.

Advantageous Requirements

  • Valid South African driver's licence.
  • Experience with hotel property maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance.
  • Basic welding skills.
  • Experience with generators, pumps, and water systems.

Salary Range

Market-related, depending on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated technical competency.

Start Date: As soon as possible.
